How Much Paint Do I Need for a Living Room?

Living rooms are typically the largest painted space in a home. A standard 5m × 4m living room with 2.7m ceilings has approximately 48–50 m² of wall area. After deducting a door and two windows, expect around 44 m² of paintable surface. Two coats at 10 m²/L = approximately 8.8 litres.

Open-plan living and dining areas can have 60–80 m² or more of wall area. Use our calculator for every wall section separately, then add the totals for an accurate whole-space estimate.

Living Room Paint Choices

Best Finish for Living Rooms

Eggshell and satin are both excellent for living rooms. Eggshell gives a softer, more matte look; satin is slightly more durable and easier to wipe clean. Both are far more practical than flat/matte in high-traffic family spaces.

Feature Walls

Feature or accent walls are popular in living rooms. Measure the feature wall separately and buy a second, complementary colour. A standard 5m × 2.7m wall = 13.5 m² — about 3 litres for two coats in the accent colour.

High Ceilings

Living rooms often have higher ceilings than bedrooms — sometimes 2.7–3m. This increases wall area significantly. A 3m ceiling adds 20% more wall area compared to a 2.4m ceiling in the same room.

Living Room Painting Tips

Move furniture to the centre and cover with drop sheets before starting

Paint from the top down — ceiling first, then walls, then trim

Use a long-arm roller extension for high walls without a ladder

Cut in all edges first with a 2" angled brush, then roll large areas

Apply two coats for even, professional-looking coverage
