Interior Paint Calculator — What You Need to Know
Interior painting is the most common DIY and professional painting project. Getting the right paint quantity means calculating total wall area for each room, choosing the correct coverage rate for your surface type, and deciding on number of coats. Our interior paint calculator does this instantly.
Standard interior latex paint covers 10–12 m² per litre on smooth, previously painted walls. New plaster, bare drywall, or highly porous surfaces will absorb more paint and need 8–10 m²/L or less per coat. Always factor this in.
Interior Paint by Room Type
Living Rooms & Open Plan Spaces
Large open areas have more wall area. Expect 8–15 litres for a standard open-plan living/dining space. Use eggshell or satin finish for easy cleaning and a subtle sheen.
Bedrooms
A standard double bedroom needs 5–8 litres for walls. Master bedrooms with feature walls may need two separate colour calculations.
Kitchens
Kitchens have less paintable wall area due to cabinets. Budget 3–5 litres. Use semi-gloss or satin for moisture and grease resistance.
Bathrooms
Small space but moisture is a big factor. Use a dedicated bathroom or mould-resistant paint in semi-gloss. Typically 2–4 litres.
Hallways & Stairwells
High-traffic, often tall walls with difficult angles. Use a durable scrubbable finish. Budget 4–10 litres depending on ceiling height and length.
Interior Paint Finish Guide
| Finish | Sheen Level | Best For | Cleanability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat / Matte | None | Ceilings, low-traffic walls | Low — mark-prone |
| Eggshell | Slight | Bedrooms, living rooms | Medium |
| Satin | Soft | Kitchens, hallways, kids rooms | Good |
| Semi-Gloss | Moderate | Bathrooms, trim, cabinets | Very good |
| Gloss / High-Gloss | High | Doors, trim, feature elements | Excellent |
Interior Painting Best Practices
Prime new drywall or bare plaster before applying any topcoat
Choose eggshell or satin for most walls — matte shows fingerprints in high-traffic areas
Paint ceilings first with flat white, then tackle walls, then trim and skirting
Ensure good ventilation — even low-VOC paints need airflow while drying
Use a quality roller and brush — cheap tools leave roller marks and brush strokes
