What Is a Paint Estimator?
A paint estimator is a tool — or the process of — calculating the total materials and sometimes labour required for a painting project. For homeowners, this typically means calculating how many litres of paint to buy. For professional painters and contractors, it extends to material costs, labour hours, overhead, and profit margin.

How to Estimate Paint for a Project
1. List Every Surface to Be Painted
Go room by room and note every wall, ceiling, and trim area to be painted. Measure each one: width × height for walls, length × width for ceilings.
2. Determine the Right Coverage Rate
Check your specific paint tin — most list coverage in m²/L. Use 10–12 m²/L for smooth interior walls, 5–8 m²/L for rough or porous surfaces.
3. Apply the Formula
Total litres = (Total surface area × number of coats) ÷ coverage rate. Add 10–15% for waste, edges, and touch-ups.
4. Calculate Material Cost
Multiply litres needed by price per litre. Add primer, brushes, rollers, painter's tape, and drop sheets to get a full materials budget.
