How to Calculate Paint for House Exterior

Painting the exterior of a house is a significant project. Accurately estimating paint quantity saves you from costly over-ordering or running out mid-project. Measure every external wall surface, including gable ends (triangular sections under the roof), and use an exterior-specific coverage rate of 6–10 m²/L depending on surface texture.

Don't forget fascia boards, soffits, eaves, and any other painted timber or metal elements. These are often a different colour and may require separate paint products.

Exterior Surface Types and Coverage

Rendered / Stucco Walls

Most common exterior finish. Smooth render covers at 8–10 m²/L; rough sand render covers 5–7 m²/L. Use a 100% acrylic exterior paint for best durability.

Weatherboard / Timber Cladding

Timber requires 7–9 m²/L depending on age and condition. Old weatherboard may need a primer plus three coats. Always sand and seal gaps before painting.

Brick (Painted)

Previously painted brick covers at 6–8 m²/L. First-time painting on unpainted brick requires a dedicated masonry primer and may need 3 coats.

Colorbond / Metal Cladding

Metal cladding accepts paint well at 10–12 m²/L once properly primed with an appropriate metal primer.

Exterior Painting Tips for Best Results

Pressure wash all exterior surfaces and allow 24–48 hours to dry before painting

Repair all cracks, gaps, and damaged areas before painting — don't paint over problems

Apply exterior primer to all bare or heavily weathered areas

Paint on overcast days — direct sunlight causes paint to dry too fast, leaving brush marks

Work from top to bottom: eaves and fascia first, then walls, then any trim near ground level
